Poverty in America
I just read an opinion piece about the underclass in America. It is definitely provocative and harsh. It subtitle reads, "The poverty Katrina underscored is primarily moral, not material". Its premise is that much of poverty today in the US is caused by anti-social behavior and bad choices as opposed to lack of opportunity. I don't know if I would paint the picture with quite a broad of brush as the author uses, but the argument definitely has validity. Regardless, in my opinion it underscores the obligation that the North American church has to reach out to the underclass. The Bible has the answers to these problems, we just need more people who know how to apply it appropriately to those most in need of hearing it.
